Roses in a bed by JG Adams

If you have a garden you can have a great rose bed. A rose bed is a small rose tree garden. This article will help you think about designing your rose tree bed. Designing and creating a rose bed is a great way to become a rose expert quickly. It is great gardening fun. You get to draw, read and shop.

I have desinged some 60 rose beds. Let me explain how I do it.

Your first task is to choose whre to put your rose bed. Choosing a site for a rose bed is a blancing act. The roses need a good loam soil and six hours of daylight. You might need it to provide a focus to a part of your garden, or mask a problem.

Once you have choosen your site you must take a note of what is already there. A lot of gardeners miss this step out. They usually have to replant. What is the soil like? What other plants are in the area? Do you need to move them? What buildings are ner by? Any hard landscaping in the way? These questions will help you to prepare the site.

Your first job is to get the bed right. If it is not a good loam you need to do some work. Dig in a lot of well rotted organic compost.

You have worked hard to get the rose bed ready. Time to take a break and put a brew on. Have a think. What do you want your rose bed to do? You might want to draw the eye to a certain part of the garden. Is there an ugly building you want to hide? When do you want the rose bed to display?

Time to hit the internet and the library. Find out which roses will do the jobs that you want them to. Find out which of these roses grow well in your area. This list is the start of your shopping list.

What I am about to tell you may sound obvious. It is surprising the number of people who forget the obvious. I spent last weekend replanting a friends rose bed. They had planted a miniture rose behind the tallest rose tree they could find.

Climbers go next to a structure. Tall plants go to the back of a bed, Small plants go in the middle. Blocks or drifts of color work best in a big garden. Small gardens need a cottage effect. this is either just one color of lots of different colors.

Get drawing: Draw a plan of your rose bed. Go through your shopping list. Which tall plants do you really like? Stick them on the plan. Which medium sized plants work best with the tall plnats. They go on the plan next. Then choose your small annual plants to provide a bit change to the bed.

You now have your final shopping list. Go and buy those roses. When you get them home put them on the rose bed. Don't plant them. Do they still seem to be in the right place? Good - get them in the ground. Before you ask - no I can't come and help.
